In US news and current events today, social distancing can lead to a spike in reports of domestic violence. Here’s what the CEO of the YWCA says you can do to help
1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. On average, more than three women are murdered by their current or former partners in the U.S. every day.
Alejandra Y. Castillo is the CEO of the YWCA USA. The YWCA is the largest domestic violence support network in the U.S. Castillo says when world events force people into their homes the number of domestic violence cases skyrocket. COVID-19 increases have already overwhelmed the system.
In China, government officials say that DV cases reportedly tripled the month that COVID-19 initially broke out. It was also reportedly more than any other month for the past 3 years Castillo says those numbers are likely similar in the U.S. One of the largest problems they are facing in this current crisis is a lack of space for victims, especially for those who may have been exposed to COVID-19 personally, and especially in many DV shelters, where beds are often in dorm-style housing. Here’s how you can help those experiencing domestic violence during the global pandemic.
