Pregnant Woman Saved By Taxi Driver From Human Traffickers. A taxi driver saved a pregnant woman from a sex trafficker after he was asked to drive her to a brothel in Coventry. Tahir Mehmood called 999 after the distraught Romanian woman burst into tears in his cab – and he is now in line for a commendation from police after his actions prevented her being forced into the sex trade. The unnamed woman, who was three months pregnant, came to Britain in February 2018 after answering Robert Enescu’s advert offering UK work as a masseuse. But she was held hostage in a London brothel before being shepherded to Coventry, where she was forced to pose in lingerie for photos being posted on sex industry websites. Enescu, a 26-year-old also from Romania, ordered a taxi so the woman could be taken to his brothel on St Christian’s Road days later. Her cab driver was Mr Mehmood, a father of two, who called the police after she explained she was being forced into prostitution. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke to the taxi driver before taking the woman to a police station. Speaking to Birmingham Live about the incident, Mr Mehmood said: “The man [Enescu] asked me if I could take her to St Christian’s Road. The lady got in the cab. When I go a little, the lady was upset. She was crying. “I said: ‘What’s up love? Why are you crying?’ I stopped the taxi and said: ‘Just tell me what’s happened.’ “She said: ‘I don’t know here, I just came here four days before, come to here to do massage, but they tell me go to prostitution, to do sex, but I don’t want to do it.'” The following day, police raided the brothel and rescued several other sex slaves. Enescu was arrested at his home in Kingfield Road, Coventry. He denied being involved in trafficking the woman, who had arrived at Luton Airport on 16 February. He was charged and found guilty for sex trafficking and jailed for nine years in his absence, having jumped bail. West Midlands Police is working with forces across the UK and Europol to bring him to justice. Officers have also released officer bodycam footage of the moment police responded to a 999 call from the taxi driver and found the victim in the back of his cab. Detective Inspector Wes Martin, who led the investigation, said the woman was “kept locked in a room at an address in Enfield with no food or heating” after arriving in London. He continued: “When our officers intercepted the taxi – following a call from the concerned driver – all she had in her possession was a bag of around 50 condoms Enescu had given her. He’d earlier smashed her mobile phone and stolen what money she had. “My officers worked tremendously hard to secure this conviction: they safeguarded the woman, liaised with officers in Romania, helped return her safely home and kept in touch while the case progressed. “It was this compassionate and sensitive response which reassured the woman and gave her the confidence to come back to the UK to give evidence.”
