A group of pro-choice campaigners delivered abortion pills to women in Northern Ireland using a drone, in Newry, Tuesday. The stunt was carried out to protest strict laws against terminations that exist on both sides of the Irish border.
The flight took off from Omeath in Co Louth, in the Republic of Ireland, and landed in Newry, Co Down on the Northern side. Two activists, one from Ireland, the other from Northern Ireland, swallowed the pills in defiance of the laws once they arrived across the border.
Alliance for Choice, ROSA, Labour Alternative and Women on Waves, were the groups behind the operation. The organisations say that the action is protected by article 10 of the ECHR, under the freedom of expression.
