A landmark case that challenges Northern Ireland’s abortion laws is being heard in London’s Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The case has been brought forward by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), under claims that Northern Ireland’s abortion laws are in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The hearing will last for three days with a verdict expected next month.
Abortions are allowed in Northern Ireland only in cases where the mother’s life is at risk, with life imprisonment for those breaking the law, forcing many to travel to England to undergo termination of pregnancy.
